CORA’s Drafting Policy

March 9, 2016 · 0 comments

In 2015, CORA’s Board was asked to implement a policy on drafting. We hosted a discussion on our website and Facebook page. Then paddlers were given the opportunity to complete a survey.

The survey was well received, but didn’t provide a clear mandate regarding drafting. What we did receive was a majority of people (58%) wanting to see drafting limited to same class/same gender in small boat races.

With that in mind, CORA is issuing a drafting policy as a pilot project for all 2016 small boat races on the CORA schedule. We are asking all small boat racers and Race Directors to provide us with feedback throughout the year regarding how this policy played out on the water. Feedback can be sent to: info@canadianoutrigger.com

All competitors will be made aware of these rules and will be asked to abide by them. Recognizing the difficulty in policing drafting infractions, there will be no penalties assessed. It is hoped that competitors will modify their drafting behaviors accordingly, and govern themselves.
