CORA AGM – November 2, 2013

October 17, 2013 · 0 comments

The Annual General Meeting for CORA is being held November 2nd at the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery Street in Vancouver. The morning will consist of the Technical Meeting and will begin at 9:45 am. The Technical Meeting Agenda will include a review of the previous racing season, insurance issues, safety reviews, membership reports and discussion and scheduling of the 2014 sanctioned events. The AGM will commence at 12:45 p.m. The AGM Agenda will include; the normal reports (Presidential, Financial, Communications), the review of the 2014 budget and finally the adoption of new bylaws.

Why is CORA changing its bylaws?

In 2009, the Federal Government passed the Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act S.C. 2009, c. 23 including the Regulations made pursuant to the Act. What this translates into is that changes in the original act were amended and it requires all Industry Canada Not-for-profits to adapt a new code and system of bylaws. The reality is, these differ little from the existing CORA bylaws, but their wording allows for more flexibility in the Corporation. The act allows for any statute or regulations that may be substituted, as amended from time to time. It will have little impact on how CORA operates/facilitates with its members, either at the individual or club level. However, the Act does require us to substitute our existing bylaws for these, and these still require member voting.

The Board has worked very hard over the last few months on this and we feel that the bylaws as presented are the most appropriate at meeting the needs of CORA. Our legal counsel agrees and we strongly encourage all CORA members to adopt these bylaws. Doing this allows us to continue our operations and our standing with Industry Canada. If you or one of your members can not be there in person, you can cast your vote using the proxy forms on the Resources page. Proxy forms must be e-mailed to CORA at information@canadianoutrigger.com and the deadline is Wednesday October 30th. If you require someone to hold your proxy vote, please contact your clubs CORA representative and see if anyone from your club is attending the meeting. If you can’t find someone in your club to hold your proxy, please contact us at our email.

Every CORA member has a vote and we value that. We also want to extend to each of you a welcome to the Technical Meeting/AGM and hope as many of you can make it as possible.

Agendas for the meeting can also be viewed from any page of the CORA website by accessing the AGM Page under the CORA Tab.
