Cora Sprint Council has modified the previous Selection process to improve the validity of the process. It is important to note the development of this process is to produce the best Canada can offer going forward towards Penticton 2012. Please read carefully.

The complete document can be found on the CORA Resource page. It is a synopsis of the process, Please read complete document for detailed information.

Canada is allotted five V-1 spots and six V-6 spots for each age category. There are six age categories for both men and women thus 6 age groups x 2 genders x 6 crews x 6 paddlers per crew = 432 paddlers (assuming all V1 paddlers also paddle V6). Extra V-1 spots have been earned for categories which made it to finals at World Sprints 2008. We will be informed of the additional number later in 2009.

The current team selection has been modified to accommodate one time trial. Previous trials have seen and trials to accommodate participants. Because of the difficulty in running 2 time trials under different conditions, the Sprint Council has decided one trial will be used for 2010 Worlds to be held in Vancouver BC.

The V6 process has been divided into two qualifications. Club or set (Pre-established) crews are encouraged to register to obtain four of the six spots in each category. These crews can be club-based or crews that are self-organized and self-named. The last two V6 spots will be reserved for those qualifying as the top 10 paddlers and top two steers people (per category) at the trials (named Canada crews). .Steers people will be named at the discretion of the coach and Sprint Council.

At trials, paddlers will be ranked using 500m OC1 time trials. V1 time trials (rudderless) will be conducted for V1 spots only. The selection process for V-1, V-6 and V-12 is outlined later in this document.

Online Registry: Online registry is available to record how many paddlers are interested in attending the qualifier. All competitors must register prior to attending a qualifier. By pre-registering, we will provide additional information, when available, later this year.

Minimum V1 Standard: : The Minimum Standards are intended as a guide to allow assessment of your competitiveness. The table represents the time needed to make the semi-finals in each category. The more competitive the category, the higher the standard. The times are approximately 15 sec off the time needed to reach the podium. If all five spots for a category are not filled from the minimum standard, entries will be assigned by fastest time, so please participate regardless of your ability to reach attain the standard.

TEAM SELECTION:
V-1 (rudderless solo outrigger canoe)

  1. SELECTION(
Top five top finishers per category at trials will be awarded V-1 spots

  2. Competitors can qualify for more than one age category. To do so they are required to race in each age class they seek qualification. In the case that the volume of entries make allowing racers to enter more than one category infeasible for regatta logistics, an adult racer will race in the lowest age category and the junior racer will race in the highest age category they seek with their time in that event being used to rank them within the other age classes. As conditions can change from one race to the next, coach's discretion will be used to adjust a racers time to reflect these conditions. If necessary, a race-off may be staged at the beginning of the National Championships (to be run the day after National Trials) to determine a final position in a category. If empty spots remain after the trials in any category they can be applied for and will be assigned at the coach and Sprint Councils discretion.

PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW SELECTION
(V-6 500m and 1000 or 1500m)
These crews register as complete crews and will be given four entries per category. If more than four crews register in any category, that category will race-off at the trials over a 500m distance. Top four finishers will be awarded the entries for both distances in that category. In the case of race-offs, a Pre-established crew must race in every contended category in which it seeks qualification.

CANADA NATIONAL CREW SELECTION
(V-6 500m and 1000 or 1500m)
Qualifying for the six seats on each crew will be in ruddered OC-1's. The top five finishers in the OC-1 trial will be named to Canada Crew A with the steering position open for the coach and Sprint Council to nominate. Crew B will be composed of the next 5 OC-1 finishers, with, again, the steers person selected as above.

Paddlers can trial for a position in a Canada National crew while holding a position in a Pre-established crew but will have to choose one or the other after learning of Canada crew placement. In the case this paddler accepts their Canada National crew spot, it is up to the Pre-established crew to find a replacement paddler or they will forfeit their entry. An Established crew that has lost more than 2 members of their crew for any reason and replaced them with paddlers lower on the OC-1 ranking list assembled after trials, may lose their entry to the fifth place qualifier if the coach and Sprint Council feel this crew change has weakened the crew sufficiently.

Seeding V-6 Entries
It is suggested that all paddlers wishing to race crew boats at Worlds, whether in a Pre-established or a Canada National crew, race the OC-1 race at trials as the results of this event will be used to seed V-6's for World's lane placement and for V-12 selections (see below). At Worlds, crews are seeded based on the ranking they hold in their country. The coach and administrator are requested to submit the seeding of the countries teams prior to the event. As Pre-established teams may not be slower than Canada teams, all teams in a category will be seeded based on the OC-1 rankings of their 6 paddlers (including steersperson). As lanes are frequently un-even at Worlds, V-6 teams will be assigned names at the World's once the lane draw has come out with the first ranked team getting the most favorable position assigned in the draw for the heats. Subsequent to the heats, progressing boats will keep the team name assigned in the heats. A paddler without an OC-1 result will be ranked following those with results, except in extenuating circumstances, whereby ranking will be at the discretion of the coach and Sprint Council.

V-12 SELECTION
V-12 crews will be composed of V-6 crews ranked one and two and three and four, according to the above outlined ranking (based on OC-1 results), regardless of whether they are Canada or Pre-determined crews.
