CORA Safety Reference Guide
- SAFETY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME!
Read your club's Code of Conduct and/or Code of Safety.
- IF IN DOUBT, DON'T GO OUT.
- CHECK YOUR BOAT EVERY TIME YOU USE IT.
Bailers? Lashings? Bulkheads and amas watertight?
- Check local WEATHER conditions eg wind speed/direction, air/water temperature, tides, currents and fog.
What are YOUR CLUB'S POLICIES on these?
- Everyone must have an approved PFD. IT IS THE LAW.
It is recommended that it be WORN and equipped with a WHISTLE.
- Can everyone SWIM?
- BE AWARE OF HYPOTHERMIA.
Wear appropriate clothing. Take a dry bag with warm hat/jacket for after paddling.
- INFORM your coach/captain/steersperson of any health issues (including medications).
- Review your HULI DRILL. Who does what?
- Let someone know WHERE YOU ARE GOING and WHEN YOU WILL BE BACK.
- Ensure your NAME and PHONE NUMBER are marked on your boat, pfd & paddle, so unnecessary searches are not launched for you should your stuff be found.
