2007 Length of the Lake Ultrapaddle - Saturday, September 22, 2007 -
"How hard could it be?"
Plan to join our young, and energetic club for this amazing outrigger racing experience on Okanagan Lake. This event just keeps getting bigger and better every year, 2007 will be the best Length yet!!
Hawaiki Nui Va'a is not the only ridiculously long race out there. Experience the changeable weather and water conditions that exist on Okanagan Lake; it can be glass, very rough, headwind, tailwind OR combinations of all these conditions during the course of a single day. Come and take part in this uniquely Canadian race. It is a great alternative to Molokai. Don't just travel huge distances to exotic venues to race; get crews from exotic locations to come and race in beautiful BC!
The Race (is long) - Join us again for a unique outrigger CANOE race on British Columbia's beautiful Okanagan Lake. Navigate the entire length of the lake from Vernon on the north shore to Penticton at the south. It is unique for the distance (100 km in a day), the style (beach change race with crew changes at aid stations along the shore), the many and multiple classes welcome to race (see list below), the complete lack of noisy, smelly escort boats, and the venue.
You have to experience it to believe it.
The Rules (are simple)
Make up crews that fit the category: OC6, OC2, OC1, kayak and surf ski (boat categories follow Sound Rowers Specifications). Crews may only change paddlers at aid stations, but can change as many or as few as deemed necessary (including no changes if you're brave enough!).
If a crew must remove a paddler from the boat at any place other than an aid station, the seat must remain vacant until the next aid station.
Crews may stop at any point along the lake, but cannot receive any outside (of the canoe) assistance. All craft must check in at all aid stations. Crews may stop for as long as they like at aid stations which will have the basic necessities of a racing paddler's life: water, sport drink and first aid. Everything else must be crew supplied. If crews have special needs bags, we can arrange for transport.
Crews must depart aid stations prior to race cut-off times. Times will be provided to crews prior to race start.
Crews will be transported via crew-supplied vehicle. There is a road that follows the lakeshore from start to finish, and allows easy access to all the aid stations. The race will be visible from the road for about 3/4 of it's entire length.
Crews entering in a 'mixed' or 'X' category must have a fully mixed crew in the canoe at all times. There will once again be an earlier start time available for small boats upon request.
Location Race Start: Kinsmen Beach, Vernon BC
Race Finish: Rotary Park, Penticton BC
Distance Approximately 100 km
Approximate time 8 - 11 hours
Start time: 0700h (earlier start at 0600h available upon request)
