The "Vancouver Outrigger Chasedown" is a new event put on by Vancouver Ocean Sports. This is as two-day outrigger racing event that will consist of a long distance OC 6 race, a small boat relay race, and a community outrigger event for beginners on Sunday.
What do we mean by "Chasedown"?
We are creating a new and exciting event that will challenge crews, steers people, and attract both national and international teams.
"Chasedown" is unique concept for an outrigger race... it's a two-loop course with a twist!
All boats will leave the start line together, and as usual will space out as the race progresses. However, instead of a steady race to the finish, the first team to complete the first lap of the course will be stopped and given their lap-time. Each subsequent team to complete the first lap will be stopped and given their lap-time. Once the last (slowest) crew completes the first lap, all the boats will head back out for a second lap, starting with the slowest team first. The other teams will follow in the reverse order they came in, with the fastest boat leaving last.
The race winner will be determined by their combined first AND second lap time... and NOT necessarily the order in which they actually cross the finish line. This will force teams to have a strategy, and the winning team may not be known until all the times are calculated. Best of all, we can look forward to a really tight finish, with all boats dog-fighting at the end!
There will be special prizes for the fastest lap and to the team that "Chasedown" the highest number of team.
Be prepared to race hard, and dog-fight right to the very end!
Small Boat Relay Sunday
Our small boat relay will be a combined course of 20 km. The relay will consist of 2 members per team (or 4 for a tandem) Each member with do 2 - 5km loops with the change happening in the protection of Maritime Museum Bay. You may either do this race in the 10km short course solo or tandem or the full 20 km long distance iron.
